Rapport. Some would argue it’s the secret weapon for success in stage hypnosis—whether you're creating an unforgettable experience for your audience or ensuring the best volunteers take the stage. But rapport is not just a weapon—it's an essential tool in hypnosis, both on stage and in therapy.
No rapport, no hypnosis.
In stage hypnosis, rapport is about building trust quickly with volunteers, getting them to feel comfortable enough to allow their imagination to take over. In hypnotherapy, it’s about creating a deep, trusting relationship that allows clients to feel safe enough to explore their issues and make lasting changes. Whether you’re performing or practicing therapeutic hypnosis, rapport is foundational to success.
As an Associate Certified Coach with the International Coaching Federation, I’ve learned how to integrate coaching principles into both stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy to build rapport effectively. Coaching and hypnosis share many core principles, and blending them can make a huge difference in the flow and success of your sessions or shows. Here’s how you can apply coaching techniques to strengthen rapport and achieve the best results—whether in therapy or stage hypnosis:
1. Establish and Agree on Roles
In stage hypnosis, your volunteers need to understand their role in the performance, just as in therapy, where your clients need to know what you’re there to help them with. Setting the stage—whether for a live show or a hypnotherapeutic session—helps align expectations. You need your volunteers to feel comfortable and confident in their ability to participate fully, just as your therapy clients need to feel confident in the process.
In my Mindhacked! show, this is crucial. From the moment I step onto the stage, I communicate to volunteers that they are the stars of the show. I empower them by letting them know that their experience is at the heart of the performance, and I’m simply there to guide them.
2. Establish Ethical Engagement Standards
In both stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy, it’s essential to maintain ethical engagement. Whether you’re working with a volunteer or a therapy client, creating a safe, respectful environment is critical. Volunteers need to trust you to lead them through the experience in a way that feels comfortable and enjoyable. In therapy, that trust becomes even more critical, as clients are often confronting personal issues.
This foundation of ethical engagement allows participants in both settings to feel comfortable and open to the process, making it easier for hypnosis to take place, whether you're guiding someone into a trance on stage or helping them achieve personal transformation.
3. Define Goals and Plan for Success
In both stage hypnosis and therapy, clearly defined goals are key. On stage, the goal is to entertain, engage, and create memorable experiences for both the volunteers and the audience. In therapy, the goal is to help clients overcome obstacles, achieve their desired changes, and move forward with newfound confidence.
For example, in my work helping clients break free from marijuana, we establish clear goals right from the start. In a recent consultation, we created a plan that energized the client—fueling their commitment and determination to quit. The energy generated in that initial consultation set the stage for lasting success. On stage, I do the same: I establish what’s exciting about the show, what the volunteers want to achieve, and get their full agreement to engage in the process. That clarity of purpose ensures the energy of the session flows smoothly.
4. Co-create Curiosity
Curiosity is the engine of transformation in both stage hypnosis and therapy. In stage hypnosis, it’s about sparking the imagination of your volunteers and the audience. In therapy, it’s about helping clients open their minds to new possibilities.
In my Mindhacked! show, I use coaching-inspired questioning to spark curiosity. For example, when I asked a timid volunteer, “What’s the most exciting thing that could happen tonight?” it set the tone for an unforgettable experience. This volunteer went on to perform an incredible demonstration—locking her arm in place so rigidly that even the strongest guy on stage couldn’t move it. The experience stayed with her for a long time, and I received glowing feedback afterward.
Similarly, in therapy, asking powerful questions helps clients envision a better version of themselves. I’ve seen clients light up with excitement and hope when they begin to see themselves as capable of change, just as volunteers in my show experience profound moments of empowerment and self-belief.
5. Demonstrate Presence
Whether you’re performing on stage or working with a client in therapy, presence is everything. Volunteers need to feel your full attention and support as they engage in the experience, and clients need to know that you are there to guide them through their personal transformation.
I always strive to be fully present, both in my shows and in my therapy sessions. This energy shows in my interactions, making the volunteers feel safe and confident and allowing them to surrender to the process. In therapy, clients feel that presence when they sense that they’re not alone on their journey. My attention to their needs and the way I adjust my approach creates a bond that deepens over the course of the session.
The Power of Coaching Principles in Both Stage Hypnosis and Therapy
Incorporating coaching principles into both stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy creates stronger rapport, engages your participants more deeply, and enhances the overall experience. Whether you’re leading a high-energy stage performance or helping a client achieve lasting transformation, using these strategies ensures that you and your participants are aligned toward success.
As hypnotists, we wear many hats—whether as performers, therapists, or coaches. By blending coaching techniques into our work, we ensure that we create a space where volunteers and clients alike feel empowered, excited, and open to the possibilities of what hypnosis can do for them.
How have you used coaching principles in your stage hypnosis practice? I encourage you to reflect on your own approach and share your experiences with the ISHA community. Together, we can continue to raise the standards of hypnosis and create experiences that truly transform.
